Heartworm in your pet is dangerous and can cause great discomfort or pain. At Graceful Animal Hospital, we take this issue very seriously.
Heartworms in dogs is caused by the bite of an infected mosquito; this is the only way dogs get it. Once bitten it may take up to seven months for the larvae to mature into adult heartworms. They can lodge into the lungs, surrounding blood vessels and the heart. They may grow up to twelve inches in length and can multiply to hundreds within your pet.
Heartworm is not contagious and cannot be passed to your other pets or to you - it can only be given by an infected mosquito.
There are some key signs that your pet has heartworm:
Persistent cough unlike regular coughs
The heartworm cough is dry and persistent
Lethargy
Weight Loss
Difficulty Breathing
Bulging Ribs
